Location icon
Auditorium 4, Markeaton Street Campus, Derby University, Derby, DE22 3AW

Speakers: Dr Susan Cartwright, Sheffield University

It has now been 100 years since Einstein initially proposed the general theory of relativity and it still remains the accepted description of gravitation in modern physics. In 1916, three ‘Classical Tests of General Relativity’ were proposed by Einstein, including the deflection of light by the sun. In recognition of the solar eclipse set to block out nearly 90 per cent of sunlight in parts of the UK on Friday March 20, Dr Susan Cartwright will explain Arthur Eddington’s process of using a solar eclipse to observe this deflection of light as well as exploring the key developments in the theory over the past century.

The event is free and open to all – places will be available to book from 11/03/15 at http://derbyiop.eventbrite.co.uk/
