Science fiction often draws its inspiration from developments in science. But science itself is not static. How has science fiction adapted and evolved to our changing view of the universe - and do the ideas of science fiction sometimes shape the way scientists think about the world? Copiously illustrated, Alastair’s talk will look at the interplay between fiction and reality over the last hundred years.
Alastair Reynolds is the author of novels such as the Revelation Space series, Blure Remembered Earth and more recently he has written Harvest of Time, a Dr Who adventure. Before his writing career Alastair did a degree in astronomy at Newcastle, then a PhD at St Andrews in Scotland. He then spent sixteen years working in the Netherlands, mostly for the European Space Agency.
