In today’s mobile network systems users are served at different service levels, with some users suffering a high volume of dropped calls and poor internet signal. This is because within a unit area of single (a ‘cell’) users are in-homogeneously distributed, and this issue will be especially problematic with the introduction of future 5G networks, where it is recognised that significant investment in antenna infrastructure is required. A dynamic antenna fine tuning and control system is a novel approach to improve signal performance across the whole of a cell whilst reducing infrastructure costs. This system automatically adjusts the parameters of an antenna to follow high usage areas and ensures that all users within a cell are serviced by a better network performance. This presentation will introduce the basic concepts of a pattern reconfigurable antenna and show how it can be applied to both current systems and to future 5G networks.
