The talk will focus on recent advances in advanced pre- and intra-operative MRI imaging and computer aided navigation in paediatric brain tumour surgery.
Conor will discus his experience at Alder Hey with the first high field (3 Tesla) intraoperative MRI scanner and surgical suite in a children's hospital in Europe. It will look at how these improved imaging techniques can give faster diagnoses and help the surgeon plan the operation for brain tumours. During the actual operation they are
used to steer a course to get to the tumour and make its sampling safer and, if possible, the removal more complete. During the last ten years the outcomes for children have been getting progressively better and these results will be reviewed in the light of advances in different imaging methods.
