Speakers: Dr Peter Nisbet-Jones (NPL)

There is always a desire to increase the precision and stability of frequency standards or atomic clocks. This talk will concentrate on the development of frequency standards in the optical region and the possibilities of new physics that such precision may bring.

Peter Nisbet-Jones is currently working on single-ion optical frequency standards, primarily Yb-171. This is a candidate system for a possible redefinition of the SI second, and has applications in tests of fundamental physics. He is also concerned with the technological improvements which will be necessary to create portable frequency standards - potentially even for use in space.

Peter received his MSci degree in Physics from the University of Durham in 2007. He then moved to Oxford and was awarded a DPhil for his work on cavity-based single photon sources. He joined NPL in early 2012 to work on the Yb-ion optical clock.

Talk begins at 6:30pm, refreshments from 6:00pm.
