Speakers: Dr Helen Brindley, Imperial College London

In this talk I will provide a whistle-stop introduction to our
climate system, focusing on three basic questions: 1. What do
we mean by climate? 2. Why is the climate so hard to predict?
3. What is the evidence for human-induced climate change? I
will explain the physics behind the greenhouse effect and
introduce concepts such as radiative forcing and feedback,
climate sensitivity and equilibrium response. I will also discuss
where the greatest uncertainties lie in our current
understanding of the climate system and explain why an
integrated cross-disciplinary approach offers the best way to
improve our understanding and predictive capabilities in the
future.

Tea and coffee will be provided from 7 pm in the Tea Room of the Poynting building
Lecture starts at 7:30pm
