Speakers: David Hughes (University of Sheffield)

Professor Hughes will review the history and science of comets from the early days when they were regarded as foretelling doom, disease, death and disaster, through the time of the Renaissance, an age when Isaac Newton first calculated a cometary orbit and then Edmond Halley discovered the first periodic comet, to modern times, including past and future investigations of comets by spacecraft.
