Speakers: Gillian Co0kson

The foundations of modern mechanical engineering were laid in the closing decades of the eighteenth century and the opening ones of the nineteenth. This lecture will explore the origins of machine-making in northern England, and the question of how much the pioneers owed to science. It also looks at migration, the movement of skills and engineers between northern metal-working centres - Tyneside, south and west Yorkshire, and Lancashire.

The event will start at 18:30 and finish about 19:30
