'Swords into Ploughshares' is a free exhibition looking at the transfer of military technologies and ideas into useful civilian applications. It has been funded by an Institute of Physics Public Engagement Grant.
There has been a long tradition in the UK exploiting the efforts of defence led research and subsequent development into more peaceful civilian markets.
Although much of this work has relatively limited applications outside of military defence, it has often generated outputs and funded laboratories, equipment and skilled researchers that are exploited more widely.
This exhibition does not enter into debate about the ethical & moral issues surrounding defence-related and defence-led activities, but provides some interesting insights into several common everyday items.
