RIA Hamilton Day Programme – Thursday 16 October 2014
With the support of Arup and the Irish Times, the Royal Irish Academy will once again honour the great Irish Scientist, William Rowan Hamilton (1805-1865).
The Academy has put together a rich programme of events to mark the anniversary of Hamilton’s historical discovery.
Public Conversation and Prize Giving 2014 – Royal Irish Academy at 3.30pm
The Academy will host a public conversation entitled: When the Engineer met the Mathematician
Mathematician Professor Cedric Villani, with Engineer Dr Salam Al-Sabah will discuss the future of Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering with a view to motivate and engage young people in STEM. The voice of the Mathematician and the Engineer will show the diversity of opportunities open to young people in these sectors.
Science Communicator & STEM educator Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain will moderate the event.
Following the Public Conversation, nine of Ireland’s top mathematics students will be awarded the Hamilton Prize in recognition of their achievements.
This year’s prize is supported by Arup and the Irish Times.
