Speakers: Professor Roy Davies, Royal Holloway

We are all used to the ease and speed of human vision and it is intriguing to consider whether machines could be instilled with the same visual abilities. In fact, far from being the simple process we might imagine, vision is a complex activity involving huge computations. The secret is to arrange for the machine to emulate the human by ignoring much of the detail in any scene, so that it can concentrate on the essentials. This talk will examine the automatic recognition of common objects such as eyes, faces, insects, and roadway markings, and will cover a range of applications including food product inspection, face detection, surveillance, driver assistance, and monitoring of surgical tools, aiming to show the sorts of things that machine vision can achieve.
