Good Vibrations - The Physics of Brass Instrument Design

Clock icon
18:30 – 18:30 31 Jan 2011
Location icon
Room P/L002, Department of Physics, University of York, YO10 5DD

Speakers: Dr Richard Smith of Smith-Watkins

Richard Smith (physicist, musician and instrument maker) will show how a background knowledge of physics has helped develop a world famous brand of brass instruments. Another part of his work is educational – aimed at disproving some of the magic, myths and mystery surrounding instrument design perpetuated by instrument makes, professors, teachers and students. To this end, he has designed demonstrations, which, whilst obvious to scientists are a revelation to brass players.
(tea, coffee and biscuits served in the concourse from 6 pm)
