Steve is an ex BT engineer who has spent several years building and launching high altitude balloons and associated tracking technology for various projects. This has included work for the BBC where he has appeared on ‘Bang Goes the Theory’ and James May’s ‘Toy Stories’. Steve is also one of the founder members of UKHAS (United Kingdom High Altitude Society) responsible for developing the licence exempt radio trackers used by the community and last year one of the UKHAS conference organisers.

He will talk about the physics and technology behind a successful high altitude balloon launch illustrated by his extensive experience of successful and a few not so successful launches! These projects have also included working with schools to help promote ‘STEM’ and the talk will finish with Dave Green from Kesgrave High School showing how students at ‘Space Club’ worked on their ‘Stratos’ project to successfully launch 2 balloons, the latest gaining the Guinness World Record for the ‘Highest Altitude Paper Plane launch’ at 35 000m.
