Ever since its inception by the future Lord Kelvin at the University of Glasgow in 1855, the physics laboratory has become a mainstay of physics degrees across the world. The practical laboratory has the potential to be an invaluable learning and teaching tool for educators, giving students the chance to experience physics in a hands-on way that simply cannot be achieved in a lecture.
That, sadly, does not always mean that the laboratory element of a student’s degree is a success – a lot of thought and effort is needed to make sure that the students’ experience of the physics laboratory is a positive one.
