A joint meeting with the Lit and Phil and the School of Physics, University of Manchester.
Bookings will be required for this event, the details of which will be circulated in early 2009.
7.00 p.m., to be followed by an optional supper.
Once the domain of James Bond and Harry Potter, “cloaking” is now close to reality. Metamaterials can be designed to induce a change in the direction of electromagnetic waves, such as light. The outcome is “invisibility”.
Sir John is the UK’s lead researcher into materials with negative refractive indices and he is a premier player on the international scene.
