In the world of scientific research, any individual researcher knows their own field well, but seeing an overarching picture, including what to read, who to talk to, and what areas of research are trending up and down is a daunting task for even the most avid reader. By using tools from economics, network science, and statistical physics on the traces left through scientific publishing, we can glean data - some useless, but some providing valuable insight - into the changing landscape of international physics research. Brief discussions of graphene, metamaterials, and quantum technologies are used to illustrate.
Coffee and tea from 7.00pm
Talk starts at 7.30pm
