Polymers – or ‘plastics’ and composites are ubiquitous though much maligned materials. The usage of naturally occurring polymers dates back to prehistoric times. The discovery of synthetic polymers in the 1850’s and their subsequent industrial production starting from 1900 or thereabouts, had dramatic influence on economy worldwide. It contributed to the – unprecedented in history – wealth creation and increase of prosperity, especially in the Western world. But some of them are seemingly indestructible, and destruction and recycling need to be considered in their applications.
