Talk Abstract:
The subject of climate change influences political and economic decisions, and is constantly being discussed in all forms of the media. The predictions of future climate change that influence all these debates are made using numerical models. But how do climate models work? What are their strengths and weaknesses? This talk will answer these questions, and show how climate models can be tested against super-warm climates of Earth's past history, from thousands to millions of years ago, and also applied to even more unusual situations, such as the climate of Tolkien's Middle Earth......
