Speakers: Dr Sara Shinton

This workshop is for IOP members currently studying for a PhD or those on a fixed-term postdoctoral research contract, and focuses on funding for travel or career development and fellowships. This workshop will teach you how to:
• Identify the best funding for your career stage and ideas
• Understand what funders expect and need to see in applications
• Write convincing applications
• React positively to reviewers
• Perform strongly at interview

Programme outline:

10:30– Navigating the Funding Landscape. An introduction to the new guide from the IOP and summary of the main messages in the guide

11:00 – Who funds physics? An overview of the key funding opportunities and their characteristics

11:30 – The Funder's perspective and what they look for in proposals.

12:00 – Funding countdown. What do you need to do to prepare yourself and your idea for a funding deadline? A short activity to help you develop a personal plan.

12.30 – Building a research career – a view of identifying funding, writing effective proposals and collaborating with other researchers.

1:00 Lunch

1.45 How decisions are made – insights from the review process, what happens in the panel and reflections on successful proposals and applicants.

2.15 Fellowship interview workshop – a short workshop which gives you the chance to experience a fellowship interview.

2.45 What makes a winning proposal – a summary of the key advice and a checklist for your next application.
