Science teachers from Schools within reach of Medway are invited to a FREE INSET event at Rainham Mark Grammar School, ME8 7AJ.
Sharron MacKenzie, Teaching and Learning Coach for the Stimulating Physics Network, will be leading the day. This workshop is aimed at providing an opportunity to look at some new approaches in the teaching of energy, including ideas for the classroom and to explore the recent changes to the curriculum at KS3.
Changes involving energy include: simple machines and thermal equilibrium; comparison of starting and final conditions, using physical processes and mechanisms instead of energy to explain changes in systems, calculation of energy and power ratings.
The focus of the day’s 3 sessions will be:
Changes to the curriculum at KS3 – toy circus to illustrate “snap shots”, energy stores and modelling.
Highly visual ways of modelling energy to encourage understanding of energy stores, dissipation, Sankey diagrams
Consider the pathways in which energy can be shifted from one store to another.
There will also be opportunity to network with other local science teachers and discuss the new approach. Lunch and Light refreshments will be provided and the event is completely free of charge.
