Two nuclear reactor designs are currently undergoing a Generic Design Assessment by the Nuclear Directorate of the HSE and the Environment Agency. These reactors are currently being constructed in China, Finland and France but research and development is still required to support the deployment and operational performance of UK new nuclear-build systems. The Centre for Nuclear Energy Technology (C-NET) at the University of Manchester will have a research focus on reactor systems, nuclear engineering and materials performance. The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) is a partnership of the universities of Manchester and Sheffield and it will focus on research to support the nuclear-manufacturing supply chain. This presentation will provide an overview of the current situation in the UK regarding new nuclear build and discuss the R&D work of these two new centres.
