Maps are not only works of art but also examples of cartography, navigation, and applications of astronomical knowledge. Especially ancient maps can help us understand how advanced navigation and cartography was at those times.
Professor H Liang was part of a research team analysing the Selden map, rediscovered in archives in 2008. It is the oldest surviving merchant's map of East Asia. She will talk about her work on the Selden map, placing it into context with navigation and astronomy. This talk will be followed by a brief introduction to what is visible in this month's sky.
