Providing a robust capability to underwrite the safety and performance of warheads in the UK’s independent nuclear deterrent is an imperative for AWE.
The talk will describe the evolution of a science based approach to meeting this challenge in the comprehensive test ban treaty era. It will start from a historical perspective summarising UK nuclear test experience and the early innovation with above ground experiments in hydrodynamics and plasma physics.
I will then present the modern approach of using advanced computational modelling validated against test archive data and high fidelity laboratory experiments, concluding with a look ahead to the major developments planned in the next few years.
