On closer examination… What scientific study can add to our understanding of Old Master paintings

The National Gallery has employed numerous scientific techniques to study the paintings in the collection since the establishment of a Scientific Department in 1946. This talk will look at some of those currently in use, focusing on imaging techniques from across the electromagnetic spectrum, giving examples of results.
