Open Dome Event - From Nuclear Reactors to Mars

Clock icon
20:00 – 22:00 28 Jan 2016
Location icon
CELS, Nottingham Trent University, NG11 8NS

Speakers: Dr S Atherton (NTU)

Meteorites can tell us about the chemical composition and formation history of the solar system. Analysing their chemical composition is one way of unlocking the secrets of our solar system. Nuclear reactions can be the key to the meteorite's composition.
Dr S Atherton (NTU) in his talk Neutron Activation Analysis – From Nuclear Reactors to Mars will explain how Neutron Activation Analysis determines the composition of a sample through nuclear reactions. Furthermore he will discuss how this technique can be used to analyse meteorite fragments and determine their origins. This talk will be followed by a brief introduction on what is visible in this month's sky.
