Physics is recognised as an important subject that is increasingly relevant for a range of interdisciplinary activity. But what does it mean to be a physicist and how can we ensure that physics education remains healthy in a world where teaching scientific literacy competes with training scientists and there is an apparent shift towards short-term, industrial application? These issues will be explored in the context of the current and future qualification framework.
