What happens when matter gets really, really cold, at temperatures very close to absolute zero? This is the story of Bose-Einstein condensation, the formation of a quantum gas at the lowest temperatures. It is a story that involves a big conundrum regarding the nature of light, a young man in India at the beginning of last century, the writing of an important letter, a prediction of Einstein’s, and a 70-year-long race to the bottom to prove him right. We will explore what it takes to make a Bose-Einstein condensate and some of the fascinating physics that happens there, such as superflow with no drag and how we may be able to use quantum gases to simulate the universe.
