Lubricants, whether they are oils for machines or creams/lotions for the skin and hair, are complex fluid mixtures. For these complex fluid mixtures, at least 80% of the fluid is comprised of a base fluid, with the remainder being a mixture of additives (dispersants, detergents, surfactants, and additives to reduce friction or prevent wear). These additives can have a large effect on the performance of the lubricant, and this meeting aims to focus on the physics of such additives and how they can influence fluid performance.
