The walk is in two parts. The first part from Reading Station to Pangbourne via Caversham is north of the River Thames and is about 11 km long. After lunch you can either take the train back to Reading station or carry on via Sulham Woods to Tilehurst, where refreshments will be available. This section is about 4 km. There is a steep ascent via steps and a hand rail into Sulham Woods The number 33 bus (every 15 mins) will take you back to Reading station.
There are several viewing points along the route: The Thames and houses at Caversham, Mapledurham House, Mill and Lock, the alpacas at Bozedown farm and Whitchurch village. Lunch will be at the Swan in Pangbourne. The route to Tilehurst passes through allotments, farm land and Sulham Woods. The area around the woods is a designated area of Special Scientific Interest, apparently supporting 300 species of moth! (and probably a similar number of dog walkers). After emerging from the woods and admiring the cooling towers of Didcot power station you will be able to relax in the sun in our garden!
Meet at the forecourt of Reading Station at 10.30. There are frequent fast trains (25 m) from Paddington.
