Royal Navy logbooks, some of which date back to the late C17, are recognised sources of historical information, but less well-known is the huge quantity of climatic information that they contain as captains and officers dutifully recorded the weather on every day of their often lengthy voyages. Only very recently have scientists begun to draw upon this vast and important source of evidence of past climates. This lecture will discuss the character and potential of logbooks and the contribution they are making to studies of climatic change.
