European partners are gearing up to start construction of the world’s biggest optical and infrared telescope.
He explains the scientific breakthroughs and hopes this will bring, and describe the technological and engineering challenges of building the huge telescope that will have a primary mirror of nearly 40 metres in diameter and be housed in an enclosure nearly as big as a football stadium.
