We are excited to announce our Science and Engineering Christmas Lecuture will consist of four talks:

Graph theory: the maths driving Internet giants
Dr Gihan Marasingha (Maths)
“Google’s PageRank and Facebook’s Social Graph are founded on similar mathematical principles. I will explain the basics of this theory and show how the same tools can be used to help model the spread of cancers.”

Printing the Future
Prof Oana Ghita (Engineering)
“I will talk about 3D printing and what can do for us in future. I will talk about the principles of 3D printing or additive layer manufacturing (as it is also called), advantages but also limitations of the technology.”

Exploring planetary climates. Oh and Aliens!
Dr Nathan Mayne (Physics)
“I will present a simplified picture of how atmospheres work, and explain what we can learn about planets discovered outside our own solar system using Earth-based models. I will also discuss historical, and more current views of life outside our own biosphere.”

The silent killer
Dr Nicky King (Chemistry)
“It causes around 50 deaths in the UK each year, and 200 hospitalisations, it is difficult to detect and diagnose. I will cover everything you should know about carbon monoxide poisoning, the facts, the fiction, the chemistry and biology and how to keep yourself and your families safe.”
