The last true solar superstorm occurred in 1859 with aurora seen in the Caribbean and problems experienced on the internet of the day – the telegraph. But what would be the impact on the sophisticated technology of 2013? This talk will explore the science behind these explosive eruptions from the sun, consider when we will experience the next superstorm and then consider its potential impact on the electricity grid, satellites, avionics, air passenger safety, GPS and communication systems.
