Superconductors are used widely in magnets and magnets are often the basis for "machines."
In this seminar, we hope to explore some of the more unusual and large scale uses of superconductors.
There will be presentations on ITER, the new international fusion tokamak at Cadareche in France, accelerators such as MICE and ISIS at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory as well as the unusual application of second generation REBCO (Rare Earth Ba Cu O) in coating cylindrical surfaces being pursued by the company 3Cs Ltd.
Application of superconductors in motors and generators, such as wind turbines, will also feature. Specific applications of High Temperature Superconducting magnets, such as MHD marine propulsion and sputter coating, will be presented as will the use of superconductors in medicine.

We would like to make the seminar informal and interactive so that the community can bring itself up to date on superconductors. Tours of the facilities working on superconductors and the background cryotechnology will be available for those interested.
