Speakers: Dr Ronald Reid-Edwards, Hull University

In 2015 we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Einstein's masterpiece, the General Theory of Relativity. Einstein spent more time thinking about quantum mechanics than relativity. I will briefly discuss the ideas of the general theory of relativity in a historical context before providing an overview of current efforts to reconcile it with the other great revolution in 20th Century physics; quantum mechanics.

I will aim to give a flavour of the problem, discuss some aspects of string theory (a tentative proposal for a quantum theory of gravity), and finally speculate on what Einstein might have made of the current state of affairs.
