Here we report on the first experimental measurements of “seed” magnetic fields in laser-produced shock waves via the Biermann battery process. Furthermore, we present the first observations of magnetic-field amplification by turbulent motions in laser-produced shock waves scaled to the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. Experiments on colliding, laser-produced jets analogous to the Coma-cluster-merger events also demonstrate nonlinear amplification and developed turbulence. These
measurements are a precursor to a turbulent dynamo that occurs when amplification is no longer limited by diffusion – regarded as the “holy grail” of laboratory astrophysics.
