The Physics of Friction

Dr Ian Taylor, Shell Global Solutions

Friction ranks alongside astronomy as the oldest science studied by humans. Our ancestors wanted to move heavy objects as easily as possible, and wanted to get from A to B as fast as possible with least effort. Even today, there are more than 50,000 researchers worldwide active in friction research. This talk gives some of the history of friction (which includes the Egyptians and Leonardo Da Vinci) and what some of the current research challenges are.
