Speaker: J Coxon, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Southampton

The Earth's Aurora is caused by particles streaming out from the Sun, which are then steered by the Earth's magnetic field towards the poles where they excite gas molecules high up in the atmosphere. The talk covers the physics of these processes and makes use of a planaterrella which models the process using two spheres in a vacuum chamber, one sphere acting as the Earth and the other as the Sun.
