In this talk, I will present the current state of play in this exciting and rapidly evolving research field, concentrating on physical insight gained from real-time observations across the electromagnetic spectrum and attempt to give a flavour of life as an observational astronomer in
the modern era of robotic telescopes and real-time discoveries.
