Fresh plans are being drawn up for the former world champion, with a long-awaited clash against Amir Khan still to be agreed, and the 32-year-old will want to end the year with an emphatic win, in what could be his final hometown fight.

Zerafa has only suffered two defeats in 27 bouts, racking up eight wins since his last loss to Peter Quillin in 2015, but Brook is feeling fresh and focused after a long camp with new trainer John Fewkes.

With Khan looking towards WBO champion Terence Crawford, Brook could switch his sights to any of the other world champions at welterweight, or move up again to challenge for titles at super-welterweight.

Zerafa will look to offer Brook stiff opposition and is a former Commonwealth super-welterweight champion. “I thrive from being the underdog and I believe that Kell Brook’s team have made the mistake of overlooking me” Zerafai said in a press release, adding, “Kell is a true warrior and a great champion, but he’s been in some tough fights and put a lot of miles on the clock. I see a ship with a lot of holes and too many holes leads to a sunken ship.”

Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn, said in a Matchroom press release "I’m delighted to see Kell back in the ring, and I expect Zerafa to give it everything on Dec. 8." Hearn added, "We know that the Khan fight is on the horizon, but this is all part of Kell’s preparation for being razor sharp and bringing his weight down to 147 pounds — Zerafa aims to spoil the party.

Today beginning at 2 pm ET streaming live on DAZN in the U.S. and airing on Sky Sports in the U.K., Kell Brook returns to action against Australia’s Michael Zerafa in Brook’s hometown of Sheffield, England.

Brook (37-2, 26 KO) is the heavy favorite here, and this was really supposed to be a final tune-up before a bout with Amir Khan in the spring of 2019. But that fight’s looking less and less likely, so Brook is turning his attention to other welterweights for potential big fights next year, assuming he gets through this as expected. Zerafa (25-2, 14 KO) is, of course, hoping to cause the big upset, but the odds are greatly against him.

On the undercard, top welterweight prospect Josh Kelly (8-0, 6 KO) steps up his competition a bit against former titleholder David Avanesyan (23-3-1, 11 KO)  and Jono Carroll (16-0, 3 KO) takes on Guillaume Frenois (46-1, 12 KO) in an IBF super featherweight eliminator.
