Speakers: Dr. Nicola Wilkin

Our everyday experience is of large objects that can be easily observed, forcing them to a well-defined state and position. At the microscopic scale, observation becomes more difficult and quantum mechanics takes over. In this talk I will describe how we create these ultracold atomic systems and some of their quantum mechanical properties. We will then look at how these are now being incorporated into quantum technologies with remarkably diverse applications in archaeology, the oil industry and monitoring climate change.
