Speakers: Dr Jenny Collier, Imperial College

Everyone is familiar with the water cycle at the Earth’s surface, where the exchange happens between the sea and the atmosphere. However there is also a water cycle within the Earth, where the exchange happens between the sea and the solid silicate mantle.  Until recently, this deep cycle has been pretty much ignored – yet it has become increasingly apparent that the small amounts of water can have a dominant effect on behaviour and given the mantle is the largest reservoir on Earth, even with small abundances it can represent a major part of the planet's total stock.  In this talk I will show how we are using geophysical methods to detect the presence of water up to 300 km below the surface.
