Ion bombardment of materials plays an important role in many industrial processes. Applications include ion implantation of semiconductor devices, ion etching, ion processing to form Micro-Electro-Mechanical Devices (MEMS), surface analysis and the use of ion bombardment for the formation of a wide range of surface coatings with improved performance. The talk will describe these applications and look at some recent developments in the field of ion-surface interactions.
