James Hough, Research Professor at the University of Hertfordshire, led the university astronomy research programme for over 30 years.  He developed polarimeters for use at several overseas observatories with observational programmes that included active galaxies, star formation, exoplanets and more recently astrobiology.  He was awarded the Royal Astronomical Society's Herschel Medal in 2010 for observational astronomy.
