What Happens Next?
This new workshop was developed by David Featonby of the Institute of Physics Network in the UK. It now comes to Ireland and will be delivered by IoP and PDST,It presents a series of easily demonstrated experiments, all with slightly unusual outcomes, each one presenting opportunities for discussion. These experiments are sometimes referred to as discrepant events: with some scientifically unexpected results. The best approach is to arrange the participants in small groups to compete in a ‘Table-Quiz’. Each team predicts the correct outcome and gives a suitable explanation for the situation. Groups are challenged to reach a consensus as to what might happen. This format promotes inquiry, collaboration, discussion and debate. The strategy can also be used for starters or prompts for revision.
This workshop is suitable for all teachers of physics including Junior Cycle Science and will be run in the spring.
