Why String Theory And Why Not: Can we construct a theory of everything?

Clock icon
19:00 – 19:00 18 Oct 2011
Location icon
Chichester I, Lecture Theatre, University of Sussex, BN1 9RH

Speakers: Prof David Bailin

This talk aims to describe in non-technical terms the architecture of the current so-called Standard Model of Particle Physics, what's wrong with it, and why we are led to believe the fundamental building blocks of matter are not particles but strings, membranes and other higher-dimensional objects.
The hope is that string theory will eventually lead to an elegant theory of all of the interactions of nature, truly a Theory of Everything!
I will also discuss the allegation that string theory is "not science", and invite the views of the audience.
Free entry, no need to reserve a place. Everybody welcome, especially non-scientists!
