Why string theory, and why not? Can we construct a theory of everything?

Speakers: Professor David Bailin - Sussex University

Professor David Bailin from Sussex University will describe in non-technical terms the architecture of the current so-called Standard Model of Particle Physics, what's wrong with it, and why we are led to believe the fundamental building blocks of matter are not particles but strings, membranes and other higher-dimensional objects. The hope is that string theory will eventually lead to an elegant theory of all of the interactions of nature, truly a theory of everything! I will also discuss the allegation that string theory is "not science" and invite the views of the audience. Attendance is free and non-members are welcome.
