Lecturer: Dr Grant Miller, Zooniverse
Abstract: The Zooniverse started life over a decade ago asking volunteers to help classify distant galaxies. It has since grown to become the world's leading platform for online citizen science, hosting projects in a wide array of research disciplines and engaging millions of people worldwide. This talk will present a brief history of the expansion of the Zooniverse, discuss it in its current state, and then go on to show how it plans to help tackle the mounting challenges of modern scientific data analysis.
Bio: Grant is a recovering astrophysicist who obtained a PhD from the University of St Andrews in 2013. He then moved to the University of Oxford to take up a role as the community manager on the Zooniverse. His role has since changed to that of a project manager and communications lead. Day-to-day he helps people in all fields of research build their citizen science projects on the Zooniverse platform, and facilitates other researchers from various fields such as computer science, social science, and economics who are interested in studying the phenomenon of citizen science itself.
